Welcome to the 2021 New York State History Day Virtual Contest!

New York State History Day (NYSHD) is an affiliate of National History Day (NHD). NHD contests are divided into three tiers beyond the school level: regional, state, and national contests. All students must participate and qualify at their assigned regional contest in order to move up to the state contest. Not sure what region you are in? Click here to find your regional coordinator. Regional contest registration details are posted on the NYSHD website

The NYSHD competition will be VIRTUAL for the 2020-2021 school year. There will be no in-person state contest in 2021.

March 26, 2021: STATE registration opens

April 9, 2021: STATE registration and project submission deadline

April 16-29, 2021: State contest virtual judging

April 30, 2021: Results announced

In addition, please allow approximately 1 hour to discuss and rank these entries with your partner judges.

You may judge multiple contests (e.g., judge your regional contest and the state contest), however this page will only register you to judge the regional contest. Visit this link for instructions about how to sign up to judge multiple competitions.

Create an Account in the Judge Registration System

  • If this is your first contest of the 2021 contest season, click "Create Account" above, then "Judge."

  • If you already created a judge account for another contest in the 2021 contest season, follow the instructions for registering to judge at multiple contests.

  • If you are a teacher who would also like to judge, you will need two separate login credentials (one for your teacher account and one for your judge account). Please use two different emails or use two distinct names (e.g., Jane Doe Teacher and Jane Doe Judge).

If you would like to preview the registration process for a judge, view this short video.

Thank you for investing your time to honor the work of New York's young historians. We look forward to your participation!
