		Burton went to Brooks School in North Andover. Afterwards, he went to Colorado University in Boulder in hopes of joining the ski team, but fate intervened. He broke his collar bone multiple times, dashing his hopes of making the team. He dropped out of CU for New York University, following his family’s expectations. He graduated in 1977 with a degree in economics. He quit economics later that year and moved to Londonderry, Vermont.
